The North

Northern Thailand is the country at altitude: old Lanna kingdom culture, mountain roads through mist, food built on herbs and pork, and a pace that makes Bangkok feel like another country — because historically it was one.

Timing the North

The North's golden window is cool season (roughly November–January): clear skies, cold mountain mornings, flowers everywhere. Burning season (roughly late February–April) brings serious agricultural smoke haze — the one season honesty requires warning about; air-quality-sensitive travellers should check current conditions and consider other regions then. Green season is lush, dramatic and underrated. Season strategy.
